An Electrical Design Engineer is a professional who focuses on the electrical systems within a vehicle. They work with a team of other engineers (including EV Design Engineers who are responsible for the design and development of electric vehicles) to create and test prototypes, and then oversee the implementation of the final product. Electrical Design Engineers may work in a variety of industries, including automotive, aerospace, telecommunications, and manufacturing. 

The job responsibilities of an electrical design engineer vary depending on the industry they work in. However, common duties include:

  • researching and developing electrical solutions to problems
  • designing new electrical products or systems
  • testing prototypes
  • supervising the manufacture of electrical equipment
  • maintaining and repairing existing electrical equipment
  • keeping up with the latest advancements
  • reading industry publications and attending conferences and seminars

Job Requirements for Electrical Design Engineer:

  • accredited electrical engineering degree from a university or college (ABET-accredited)
  • passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam to earn the Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification, and working under the supervision of a licensed Professional Engineer (PE)
  • several years of experience and taking the Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) exam to earn professional license
  • practical experience in the field of electrical engineering, either through internships or working as a junior engineer
  • strong foundation in electrical engineering principles
  • strong understanding of physics and mathematics
  • being able to apply the knowledge they have to the design and development process
