Electrochemists are scientists who focus on the study of chemical reactions. They are responsible for many developments in the field of transportation, which includes electric vehicles and batteries. As the need for these items grows, so does the demand for electrochemists, who research efficient and cost-effective ways to improve current and future technologies. Most electrochemists have at least a bachelor’s degree in chemistry or a related field. Many also have a master’s degree or doctorate, which can be helpful for advanced research positions.

As an electrochemist, you will be responsible for:

  • developing new technologies and improving existing ones
  • working with a team of engineers
  • making products more efficient and reduce their environmental impact
  • working on ways to improve battery life and range
  • working on new types of batteries that could be used in electric cars
  • ensuring that the production process runs smoothly and that the products meet all safety and quality standards
  • testing and troubleshooting existing technologies

The skills an electrochemist needs include:

  • A strong understanding of chemistry, mathematics and physics
  • The ability to work with a team of engineers and technicians
  • The ability to design and develop new technologies
  • The ability to design and carry out experiments, in order to test hypotheses and gather data
  • The ability to analyze data and draw conclusions from it
  • The ability to test and troubleshoot existing technologies
  • A bachelor’s degree in chemistry or engineering
  • The ability to communicate findings clearly, both in writing and verbally
