A training engineer is a professional who designs and implements training programs for employees of an organization. Training engineers work with subject matter experts to identify the needs of employees and create training programs that meet those needs. They also design and oversee the implementation of e-learning solutions and other technological tools used in employee training. They may work in a variety of industries, including manufacturing, healthcare, service, and government or be employed by companies to develop and deliver training programs. They also may be self-employed and work as consultants.

A Training Engineer is responsible for:

  • developing and delivering training programs that teach employees how to use the equipment, tools, and software associated with their job
  • assessing the training needs of employees
  • designing and implementing programs that meet those needs
  • updating existing training programs as new technologies or processes are introduced
  • delivering the training themselves, or they work with other trainers to deliver the programs
  • managing the logistics of training events and coordinating with other members of the training team to ensure that all participants have a positive experience
  • create instructional materials and activities (including classroom-based courses, e-learning modules, and on-the-job simulations)
  • evaluate the effectiveness of training programs and make necessary revisions
  • collect data from participants through surveys and interviews
  • analyze this data to identify areas for improvement

Requirements for Training Engineer:

  • a bachelor’s degree in engineering, education, or a related field
  • sometimes master’s degree or higher is required
  • experience in designing and delivering training programs
  • certification (not required for most positions, but it can give an advantage in the job market)
  • excellent project management skills
  • being able to juggle multiple projects at once

Most common types of training engineers:

  • Systems Training Engineer: A systems training engineer designs and develops training programs for complex systems. They also conduct research to identify best practices in system training
  • Instructional Designer: An instructional designer creates learning experiences and materials, such as manuals, guides, and webinars. They focus on how people learn and what motivates them to learn
  • Technical Trainer: A technical trainer specializes in teaching people how to use technology. They often work with software or hardware developers to create training materials and programs
  • Human Resources Development Specialist: A human resources development specialist focuses on employee training and development. They design programs that help employees improve their skills and knowledge
